I have had a missing piece of the side flange around 9 o'clock to 1 o'clock professionally restored. This lid is RARE & displays real great!....only some flange section professionally refilled. What the lid looked like underneath, about 3 years ago, before restoration, is shown in pic 10...sorry a bit blurry, as photograph taken from restorer's pictures! The base is a reasonable fit and is drawn from my supply of antique bases and matched with the lid. Description

    On offer here is an
    antique, under-the-glaze-transfer-advertised,
    PHILADELPHIA
Shaving Cream Jar or "pot lid
    "
    This is a
    PRETTY RARE lid
. One hardly ever sees this color, in this pattern, come to auction. It is
    NOT LISTED
in this color in Jackson's reference book
of American Pot lids! It dates, by my estimation, to about
    1870's
and was, as you can see, commissioned by the famous retailer of the day,
    Xavier Bazin of Philadelphia
. The lid measures about 3 3/4" in diameter and stands about 1 3/4" tall when the lid is seated on top of the base section. (see size comparison with a
    regular can of Coke
    in the last pic!)
This beauty displays fantastically and will grace any pot lid collection! Plus it is

FOR VIEWERS WHO MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH THESE DELIGHTFUL LITTLE LIDDED JARS....THEY WERE USED BETWEEN APPROX. 1840-1920 TO MARKET VARIOUS PRODUCTS WHICH CAME IN A PASTE FORM. AFTER WWI THEY BECAME OBSOLETE AS MORE MODERN AND ECONOMICAL FORMS OF PACKAGING REPLACED THEM.   THE RECOVERY AND COLLECTING OF THESE OLD PIECES HAS BECOME A POPULAR, WORLD-WIDE HOBBY, AND A QUAINT REMINDER OF A BYGONE ERA.         BE ASSURED, YOU ARE BIDDING ON A GENUINE AND AUTHENTIC PERIOD PIECE.
